Mae’s Website

It can get really crowded, so you have to pay attention to what time you are going there. We went when it was moderately busy (about 4-5 people in line ahead of us) and waiting about 15 minutes. It was nice, though, because they had just opened up the back deck and it was a beautiful morning. I really liked sitting back there though the sun was in just the right position to shine in my eyes. I also felt we might have been a little more ignored because we were sitting so much away from all the other busy happenings inside.

The food was alright, but there was nothing special about it. It was just “ok”. I can’t even remember what I had now, but I think it was the cinnamon roll french toast, and it was too sweet. I could be thinking of another place, though. Personally I think because this place is so popular with everyone else, I’d rather go somewhere else where I didn’t feel like my waitress was running around like a crazy person trying to keep up with all her tables.

I probably have to try this place again and give this entry an update…

Street parking only, but I’ve never had a problem finding parking at any Greenwood restaurant. A great place that makes you feel like you’re eating at home. Run by a nice Greek family that definitely know their regulars and are always friendly and helpful. It’s a small place, but people seem to come and go relatively quickly. They have a counter, but most people just sit in the giant mess of small tables in the middle of the room.

I had one of their weekend specials - raspberry french toast with bacon and eggs. My boyfriend tried the biscuits and gravy, which he claimed were some of the best he’s ever had. I personally thought the coffee was a little weak, but Chris said it seemed like “standard diner coffee” to him. *shrug* ? Who knows, I’m kind of a coffee snob anyway. The food was really good and I didn’t finish it all, like usual.

Since it’s just a couple people trying to serve everyone at once, they were kind of slow to take our order, but it seemed like the food instantly appeared after they went back to the kitchen. Sit by the window and people watch while you are waiting, and enjoy your morning :)

website for this chain

They have a short menu, but all the items are decent and moderately priced (about $7 for their cobb salad, my favorite). Their breakfast is pretty good, $4 will get you a breakfast sandwich (bagel and a couple toppings like mozzarella or egg or bacon or whatever) and a grande coffee.

Their coffee is pretty good for a chain restaurant that doesn’t even specialize in coffee, and it maybe the best place for getting a soy latte downtown (or at least the best place closest to my work). The difference is that they don’t use Silk Soy Milk, and it makes their lattes more frothy and with a smoother taste.

My co-workers eat here about 3-4 times a week for all meal times. I don’t eat in very often, but the atmosphere is nice and soothing, with many tables (some overlooking the street, some overlooking the Macy’s sales floor).

It’s important to note that they bake their own flatbread. It’s nice to kind of walk in, watch the guys rolling out dough and putting in the fire. You get a piece of bread with your salad, or, obviously, your sandwich is made with it. With your sandwich, you get the option of having a bag of chips (Tim’s) or a bag of carrots as your side, a nice and healthy option. Personally, I hate carrots, and I wish they offered a couple more options, like sliced apples or celery.

I am always impressed by classic American diners that serve good food with many options. I look forward to going here for breakfast one morning. We stopped by late Sunday afternoon, and there were a few open tables but it looked like there plenty of people around. Service is quick and friendly, and the waitress was happy to give me suggestions on her favorites.

I love shakes, and they had plenty of flavors - peanut butter is awesome. They aren’t cheap - about $4.50 each - but the shake is acutally about two glasses full, so maybe it’s worth it.

I got the Super Burger with a turkey patty and onion rings. I was so full but I kept eating those awesome onion rings anyway. My boyfriend got the “fit fries” instead of regular fries, and I don’t know what exactly made them “fit” but they tasted like normal fries to me. They also offer fruit or cottage cheese instead of fried foods. How great is that? Like I said, this place gives you a lot of good options for whatever food-mood you’re in.

I’m definitely going back here often.
